Moving in November – Radio Salon 1: The Curators

“There is no supermarket for international dance art, where art works would be already categorized and you could go to the feminism section and then you could go to the critique of colonialism -section.”

In November 2018 Esitysradio realized the Radio Salon series, a three-part collaboration with the dance festival Moving in November, Goethe-Institut Finnland, Nuoren Voiman Liitto and The Finnish Critics’ Association. In the first Salon Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen discuss with Mikael Aaltonen and Ari Tenhula, the artistic directors of the festival.

The following two parts of the Radio Salon series took place during the festival as small-scale public events hosted by Nuoren Voiman liitto. In the second salon Tuomas and Janina discussed with critics Mia Hannula, Eeva Kauppinen and Maria Säkö. In the third salon the guests are choreographers Eisa Jocson, Benoît Lachambre and Elina Pirinen.

 

Anna Maria Häkkinen: Dance

“Could the impact come from dance itself?”

Dance by choreographer Anna Maria Häkkinen is being performed in October 2018 at Stoa, Helsinki, as a part of the program of Zodiak Center for New Dance. Mira Kautto and Janina Rajakangas from Esitysradio had a talk with Häkkinen and composer and light designer Erno Aaltonen. The discussion is in Finnish.

Sonya Lindfors: Cosmic Latte

“In the middle of all this crap it feels terribly important to dream about the future, both on personal and artistic levels.”

Choreograph Sonya Lindfors’ Cosmic Latte premiered in May 2018 at Zodiak Center of New Dance in Helsinki. Esitysradio’s Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen met Lindfors for the second time, the first being two years ago, after Noble Savage. The discussion is in Finnish.

Mikko Hyvönen: crystal pieces: human beings

“I am interested in different levels of consciousness, for example shamanistic drumming practices or psychedelic healing plants.”

crystal pieces: human beings by choreographer Mikko Hyvönen and Jyväskylä-based dance company Off/Balance was performed in April 2018 at Zodiak the Center for New Dance in Helsinki. Hyvönen comes from Kainuu, lives in Brussels and works internationally both as a dancer and a choreographer. Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen had a talk with him, in Finnish.

 

Xmas Special! Post-MJ Era Institute of Consciousness / Emmi Venna & Ossi Koskelainen: Afterlife

“I hear a music and everyone’s happy.”

Post-MJ Era Institute of Consciousness premiered a simulation of Michael Jackson’s afterlife at Baltic Circle Theatre Festival in Helsinki in November 2017. Afterlife was the third part of the series that has since 2015 articulated the influences of the spectacle through the mythical terrain created by Michael Jackson. Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen discussed with the intiators of the project, Emmi Venna and Ossi Koskelainen. The discussion is in Finnish.

Jamila Johnson-Small: i ride in colour and soft focus, no longer anywhere

Last Yearz Interesting Negro alias Jamila Johnson-Small performed i ride in colour and soft focus, no longer anywhere at the Baltic Circle International Theater Festival in November 2017. Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen had a short discussion with Jonhson-Small just before she stepped into the airport bus.

Dana Michel: Mercurial George

Choreographer Dana Michel’s Mercurial George was performed at Stoa in Helsinki as a part of the program of Moving in November -festival in November 2017. Discussing with Michel are Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen.

Jefta van Dinther: Dark Field Analysis

“I was thinking it should be two really buff, muscular, naked guys who would talk of something really sensitive.”

Choreographer Jefta van Dinther’s Dark Field Analysis was performed at Kiasma Theater as a part of the program of Moving in November -festival in November 2017. His choreography for Cullberg-ballet, Protagonist, was in turn performed at Tampere Theater Festival in August. Discussing with Van Dinther are Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen.

Anna-Mari Karvonen: Amor Fati & Peggy Pickit ser Guds ansikte

“The body as a passage – of life and of various forces: alcohol, food, viruses, loves, hopes, fears.”

Amor Fati by Anna-Mari Karvonen and Anni Puolakka was performed at Kiasma Theatre in September 2017 and Karvonen’s direction Peggy Picket ser Guds ansikte premiered at Svenska Teatern in January of the same year. Esitysradio saw Amor Fati in Kiasma and Peggy Pickit ser Guds Ansikte at Tampere Theare Festival in August.  The discussion with Karvonen, by Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen, is in Finnish.

Eino Saari / Vaara Collective & Kajaani Town Theatre: The Touch of Man

“Touching other men is a great deal easier and more natural to me than it was before I started this.”

The Touch of Man, a documentary theatre piece by Kajaani City Theatre and Vaara-collective, visited Stoa in Helsinki on 29th-30th of September 2017. The Touch of Man is based on tens of interviews the director Eino Saari conducted with Finnish men and experts, on their personal history of touching and the culture of male touch in general. Janina Rajakangas and Tuomas Laitinen from Esitysradio had a discussion with Saari, in Finnish.
